Thematically, do what you want. Mechanically, monk is probably the stronger base with stances, flurry, better AC, better saves, ki strike and super fast movement. Magus does not go along with shield as it hungers for actions. You will want sparkling targe for a shield build, as this ease your action pressure by focus spell. You are going to spellstrike less and rely on regular strikes with buffing spells when using a shield.
